Sérgio Remondes

About
Artist's statement
My paintings are born from an inner need to build worlds—worlds where cultural memory and imagination coexist, where different visual languages overlap to create something both personal and universal.
I draw inspiration from Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula, from Europe, Brazil, and distant cultures that resonate with me, weaving them into my own evolving mythology. Each canvas is an encounter between rigorous technique and playful experimentation. I work with the tools of classical painting but challenge them through expressive gestures and unexpected compositions.
Through my work, I aim to create a dialogue between past and present—a space where fantasy becomes a lens through which we view and reframe our collective and individual histories. I believe painting can still surprise us, still carry stories, still breathe.
What drives me is the tension between memory and invention, structure and freedom. I don’t seek answers, but presence—something that feels alive and lasting.

Biography
Sérgio Remondes was born in March 1976 in Normandy, France, and grew up in Porto, Portugal, where he also pursued his studies. He currently lives and works in Paris, continuing a prolific artistic career that began with his first exhibition in Porto in 1997.
His work is part of both institutional and private collections across the globe. Remondes' paintings open a window into a world of fantasy—rich, layered narratives that draw on diverse cultural references from Portugal, the Iberian Peninsula, Europe, Brazil, and beyond. Each element contributes to a personal mythology that merges classical techniques with expressive, experimental gestures.
At the core of his practice is a desire to balance tradition and innovation: to create paintings that feel simultaneously fresh and timeless, contemporary yet rooted in the museum-worthy lineage of Western painting. His work resists easy classification, standing instead as a testament to the imaginative and multicultural dimensions of visual storytelling.
