About

Artist's statement

From the first moment I noticed the translucence of wood, I knew this was something I wanted to explore more. What transpired was months and months of struggling with new techniques in regards to the ever finicky nature of wood, particularly thin end grain wood. To prevent seasonal /atmospheric movement of the wood, I incorporated epoxy as a solidifying tool. As a new and notoriously demanding medium, this led to many more months of testing and honing. Creating a lightbox that is hangable like a traditional picture / painting frame has allowed the pieces to live in almost any space. Another unique feature of these light boxes is their truly two-in-one nature: with the light on and the light off. With the light off, one can enjoy the natural beauty of the grain patterns. And then with the light on, the given space is transformed by the warm light that bleeds through the grain.

Biography

I am a self taught multidisciplinary artist living and working in Lisbon for the last 10 years. Originally from Los Angeles, California born to Swiss parents, I knew I would come back to Europe one day. Surfing was the gateway that brought me to Portugal and I haven't found a reason to leave since. My artistic journey began with traditional oil painting (abstract, portraits and cityscapes). Through the years I picked up woodworking have been making custom hardwood frames for my own pieces as well as others. Currently, I am exhibiting throughout Lisbon with both original paintings and all wood lightboxes. Custom artisanal furniture has also been a service I have been developing more, particularly since opening a large shared art + woodworking studio in Campolide, Lisboa called Espaco Ziggy.
